Encouraging start at the first round ~ A large entry of 54 Cadets entered the double header at the Trent Valley Kart Club meeting at the PFI circuit in Lincolnshire. The circuit is very impressive with covered grandstands, good facilities, all tarmac paddock area and an electronic display board showing the competitors positions and lap times. I was very pleased to get through to the A final on my first attempt ~ not a easy thing to do, bearing in mind these are the top Cadet drivers in the Country. The conditions on Saturday were ideal, albeit very cold. On Sunday the conditions were not pleasant ~ damp and miserable with a very greasy track. I was disappointed not to get through to the A final. Only 4 competitors go through to the A final from the B final....... on the penultimate lap I was in a comfortable 3rd position, when I lost control in one of the corners. By the time I recovered, it was too late............. all in all, I'm reasonably pleased after my first Stars event. I would like to thank Ross Allen for all of his help on the day.

My first win at Stars ~ British Cadet Championship - Rowrah hosted Round 3 of the MSA British Cadet Championship on 25th May. Friday, a test day, was a learning day for me as I have never been to this track before. It is a brilliant track. We found out during testing, that our old Zip Blade kart handled better than my new Zip Storm, so we decided to race the Blade. Sunday started off very windy, but it settled down throughout the day. In my first heat I started in 11th position and finished a promising 6th. My second heat was even better, as I started 7th and took the lead on the last corner of the last lap to win my first Stars heat. Heat 3 was alright, as I started 20th on the grid and finished 10th. I was shocked when I was told that I would be starting the A final in 5th position! I was nervous and in the end I finished 11th which wasn't a bad result, bearing in mind these are the top Cadet drivers in the country. All in all, it was a brilliant weekend and I couldn't of hoped for a better weekend. Thanks to Dad and Ross Allen for all of their help ~ it really did help and most importantly work.

Hot weather and hot competition ~ Having missed the Friday test day, I was still quick on Saturday test day. With the lap record standing at 53.33s going into the weekend, at the end of the weekend I set a new personal best time at 52.89s. I started 3rd in Heat 3 and made a bad start dropping to 15th but made up one more place to 14th until the race was red flagged. At the restart I was fighting in a large group for 8th but had to settle for 10th. In Heat 4 I started 23rd and finished 9th. A much better heat for me, gaining 14 places. In my final Heat 6, I started 11th on the grid and made another bad start dropping me to 19th but fought back to 9th. All of this work put me 16th on the grid for the A final. I had a good battle with Macaulay Austin, Max Vaughan, Ricky Collard, Ben Barnicoat, Trevyn-Jay Nelson, Sam Vanderpump, Matthew Graham, Alfonso Skriczka and Tom Read for 9th position when it all came to tears and a broken arm on the last lap. There was a pile up and I just managed to avoid it but lost some places in the meantime as I had to take avoiding action onto the grass. In the end I came 16th obtaining the 7th fastest lap of the day. I have now improved my position in the British Championship by 2 places to 19th position. I would like to thank Dad and Ross Allen once again and my sponsor Car Medic. |

This
was my second visit to Llandow Kart Club in the Vale of Glamorgan. In
my first heat I made up a couple of places on the first lap, but then
I had carburettor problems on lap 3. As a result, I had dropped to 18th
position by the last lap but luck was 'shining' on me! About 12 of the
front competitors thought they had seen the chequered flag and pulled
into the pits! As a result, I crossed the line in 7th position! In my
second heat, I didn't have any carburettor problems but I found that there
was limited grip due to the showery conditions. In my final heat, I gained
9 places and would have finished in 8th position if I had not got involved
in a last lap collision {not my fault!}. I qualified 15th in the A final
and made up places on the first lap to 12th position BUT eventually dropped
back due to problems of grip.

My
first trip to Belgium - Round 6 and 7 of the Stars of Tomorrow British
Cadet Championship were abroad at the Belgium Kart Track near the town
of Genk. The weather was very mixed, but fortunately both finals were
dry. In the Saturday heats I got 'fired off' in every heat; I started
in pole position in the B final. I won the B final by almost 3 seconds.
In the A final, I started 25th and finished 16th. I was rather disappointed
although I had the 5th fastest time. Sunday was wet, so Dad fitted the
new wets that he had ordered for the meeting. These are never as good as
'bedded in' wet tyres; this was shown by my heat times. I started 22nd
in the A final and made a fantastic start to get to 12th position by lap
3. In a bid to push on even further, I made a mistake and dropped back
to 22nd. In the end I came 18th. It was a fantastic experience to race
in a different country ~ on the whole I was disappointed with my results.
I need to work on my race craft. I would like to thank Ross Allen, Dad
and Grandad for all of their help.

Round
8
The final rounds of the British Cadet Championship were held at Shenington Kart Club near Banbury. The meeting was a double header; a meeting on the Saturday and another meeting on the Sunday. It was luckily dry for the weekend ~ a rare event in this country! On Saturday 13th September, I had mixed success ~ in my first heat I started 3rd and took the lead on lap 2. During the race the lead was changing and I dropped back to 4th but then regained the lead on lap 5. I eventually finished 5th with the 3rd fastest lap. In my second heat I went from 21st on the grid to 10th, in the process I recorded the fastest lap. In my 3rd heat, I finished 3rd from 10th on the grid, after making a good start reaching second position in the first lap..The final was disappointing as I dropped from 9th on the grid to 16th position. I held my position up to lap 7 but in the process of avoiding an accident, I dropped to 20th! I was disappointed after a obtaining a good final grid position. Round 9 My first heat was very disappointing as I was leading up to lap 7 {this seems to be a difficult lap for me ~ see above}, I dropped to 10th position. This was due to making a mistake at the hairpin. At this level, if you make a mistake and 'go wide', the following train of karts can easily overtake. My second heat was much better making up 12 places from 19th to 7th position. In my final heat, I made up two places {I should have made more places}, but I obtained the fastest lap! In the final, although I only made two places in the race, I managed to obtain the fastest lap and A NEW LAP RECORD in the process. My time was 50.28 s............... at the time of writing this, the new lap record is shown on the Shenington Website {see my links page}. In summary THE ROSS RACING TEAM sponsored by CAR MEDIC of Leighton Buzzard have thoroughly enjoyed racing in the British Cadet Championship. Finishing in the top 20 was our goal and being in 14th position before drop scores was very rewarding. To win a heat at Stars......... to have several fastest laps............to often beat the top teams........... and to finish the last round with a lap record, is more than we hoped for in our first season at this level. I would like to thank CAR MEDIC, Ross Allen of Jade Karts, Granny for all of the catering sponsorship, Grandad for the race entries and keeping the Website up to date and of course Dad who kept the kart going throughout the Championship. I can't wait until next year................ |
